Skippack Love From Visit Philadelphia.com

"Quaint to its floorboards, Skippack embraces its historic appeal. Amid the covered bridge and old-fashioned lampposts, however, visitors find stylish gift stores and galleries and buzzing restaurants and bars that speak to a modern-day audience. With a mixture of European charm and hippie ease, this shopping-centric town has evolved through the years to become a popular tourist destination.

HISTORY

Skippack’s origins date back to 1683, when German settlers overran Germantown and moved by boat up the Perkiomen Creek to a place where the shallow water prohibited further travel. There they stayed and there they named the land “Schippach.” In 1795, Jacob Reiff opened the first store in town, thus beginning Skippack’s long reign as a shopping hub. When the Souderton, Skippack & Fairview Electric Railway Company was formed in 1901, trolley service brought further visitors and more extensive development. (A trolley car has been preserved outside of Hotel Fiesole.) By the 1990s, Skippack’s still-rural charms inspired reverent redevelopment of its stores and restaurants.

ITS MAIN STREET

The appropriately named Skippack Pike serves as the hub of the town. Most of the restaurants and shops are clustered in small buildings along or slightly removed from the street.

ARTS & CULTURE

Given the inspiring creekside setting, visual artists and art are plentiful in Skippack, most notably at Art by Heart Gallery, locally minded boutique Pennsylvania Traditions and the interactive studio and gallery Black Sheep Pottery. A local institution, Skippack Playcrafters stages ambitious theater productions.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

History lives on in annual Revolutionary War encampment reenactments on the Indenhofen Farm, a restored 18th-century homestead. Mill remnants and 18th-century homes are visible around nearby Evansburg State Park, which is also an ideal locale for picnics, trout fishing, golf, hiking and horseback riding. The Perkiomen Trail, a 20-mile stretch for biking, walking and jogging, can be accessed here too.

FOOD & DRINK

An elegant Parisian-style restaurant and wine bar, Brasserie 73 serves classic French cuisine. The mobile Love Hot Dog Company, popping up in the Skippack Farmers Market parking lot and the Food Truck Pod, slings exotic hot dogs, game sausages and toppings and keeps it fresh with a weekly changing menu. The Skippack Italian Market keeps the Philly spirit alive with an extensive array of hoagies, while The Fat Cat serves light breakfast and lunch fare and espresso. The Hotel Fiesole and The Cabana Bar/Basta Pasta host live music, the former in a sophisticated lounge setting, and the latter, weather permitting, in an island-inspired outdoor setting.

SHOPS, SHOPS, SHOPS

Foodie wares abound in Skippack: Le Butler’s Pantry’s extensive gourmet kitchen supplies; Miss Riddle’s Candy Shop’s new-school and old-school confections; the Village Wine Cellar’s vintages from the local Crossing Vineyards and Winery; the Land of Olive Oils, Balsamics & More’s many gourmet selections; and The Grand Fromage’s exquisite cheeses—some of which are local, condiments and other makings for a Perkiomen picnic. Fashionistas adore Timeless Styles’ well-curated selection of vintage and new clothing and accessories and The Skippack Hope Chest’s new and gently used designer apparel, jewelry, handbags and accessories. In addition to the many antiques and vintage shops around town, there are monthly Trash to Treasure sales held one Saturday a month from spring through fall.

EVENTS & FESTIVALS

Hardly a week goes by in Skippack without a special event, whether it’s the Car Show (June), the Village Carnival (July) or the Winetober Fest (October). October’s Skippack Days is the biggest event weekend on the calendar as the town makes way for crafts, jewelry, art and other vendors, as well as music and family activities. Local businesses offer specials on First Fridays, held from April through October, which celebrate local art and music with activity spilling out onto porches and sidewalks."

I absolutely love living in a town with some many things to do! So great to see it finally getting the attention it deserves! Come any weekend, and find something fun to do!

Annual Classic Car Show

This past weekend was the perfect start to Summer in Skippack!

The sun was shining and the engines were revving. With many car enthusiasts flooding the area the restaurants were packed and the band was groovy, if you missed out make sure to check out "I Love Skippack" for a list of upcoming events, and be sure to mark your calender for next year :)

The Skippack carnival in my eyes is the opening of summer with yummy vendors treats, the laughing of kiddos winning huge stuffed bears and the hum of all of the great rides.

Carnival Time!

"Everyone should know the happiness of living in a town like Skippack, where an old-fashioned carnival, with bright lights, popcorn, cotton candy, and festive noise, sprouts for a short few days in summer. It reminds us that life is not all about work, decorum and responsibility. That we, children of all ages, must set aside a time and space for simple, low-cost, goofy fun. No sophistication please; it will destroy our happiness.
This morning like most, I began my day with a part-walk, part-jog through Skippack Village before work. The air was cool and the carnival rides and characters were still; they looked like statues with a sense of humor. Quiet. Eternal plastic smiles. Waiting for the children.
Tonight, in the hot summer evening, the carnival came to life. It is a small town carnival. A serenade of children’s laughter and screams. No Disney or Warner Brothers corporate branding. Just a small gathering of rides, games and concession stands.
Above one of the games, ping pong ball-toss into a pyramid of goldfish bowls, is a sign which reads “Every Bowl Is A Winner.” This is a great philosophy to live by: No matter what life hands you, you are a winner because it is good to be alive. Every bowl is a winner.
A barker gets my attention and for 5 dollars, I get three throws of the dart. Eventually, I put down five more dollars, throw seven darts, and succeed in popping three balloons. For my effort, I get a stuffed, snow-white gorilla wearing a bow-tie. I hand it to my wife, troubled recently by a severe illness in her family, and it is a moment of sweet laughter without sarcasm or irony, a moment free from worry and anxiety.
A carnival is priceless."

Calling all families! Head on over to Skippack from Wednesday thru Saturday with plenty of rides and carnival treats.

Chili Hot Chocolate

One of my favorite things to do after a big snow storm is to curl up with a great cup of hot chocolate! I love traditional hot chocolate with simmered milk, loose coco and a dollop of whipped cream. Today however I was looking for something with a little sweet and a little spice. By just adding a little chili and cinnamon powder to the mixture it creates the perfect spice.
